The artist, Suzette Franck, comes from a French Canadian ancestry. However, growing up in Southern California, she was heavily influenced by the festive Mexican culture. As you can see by her painting style and choice of color palette, she is heavily inspired by the vivid colors used for celebrations, fashion, and art in Mexico. She discovered Frida Kahlo as a young adult and fell in love with her uniqueness and passion for art, and the fact that she lived outrageously on her own terms.
Frida’s love of animals and bright colors inspired this acrylic painting, “Frida Con El Loro Feliz”. This artwork features a portrait of Frida wearing her usual flower crown and fancy earrings. She is holding up a happy parrot with her right hand and gazes peacefully at the beautiful tropical bird, which seems to be trying to gain the attention of the viewer with its mischevious charm.
This painting was based on a photo of Frida that was taken at her infamous “La Casa Azul”, aka The Blue House, located in Coyoacán, Mexico City, which was built by her father. It has since become a museum dedicated to the life and works of Frida Kahlo.
